Issue 14: The demise of England in White Ball Cricket!

Just over 5 years, and the scenes from that glorious 50 Over White Ball Cricket World Cup Win seem a very distant memory!

In the Issue this week, I discuss (or rather rant) about the subsequent demise of England’s 50 Over Cricket, which follows hot on the heels of their T20 game as well.

Lots of reasons for that, and I try to summarise in just a few minutes. Here are a few:

1. After winning the World Cup for the first and only time in 2019, the ECB saw fit in its wisdom to reduce the domestic 50 Over competition to what amounts to a set of reserve games!

2. England do not seem to distinguish between 20 Over & 50 Over Cricket.

3. It does appear that there is set profile of an England player at the moment – those with what’s called a “high ceiling”. All very well, but how long will it take to get there, and what about some terrific players who don’t get a look in?

4. In the recent Champions Trophy, in Pakistan & Dubai, England picked one, yes, one spinner. The side balance was deliberately picked to incorporate 3 right arm fast bowlers, and a fudge 5th bowler. What a surprise that it did not work.

Have a listen and do comment as to what you think. It could be a long way back. For perspective, Australia have won the 50 Over World Cup 7 times already!
