Episode 11: Liz Pemberton

My Guest on this Episode of the Clarendon Chronicles Podcast is Liz Pemberton.

Liz is a leading academic and influential voice in the fields of Diversity and Anti-Racism in the UK, with a special focus on Early Years and Educational settings.

She is the Director of The Black Nursery Manager Ltd – a training & consultancy company which focuses on Anti-Racist practice within Early Years.

With 20 years’ experience in the Education sector, Liz’s roles have included Secondary School Teacher (QTS), public speaker and up until 2020, Nursery Manager. With a Master’s Degree and multiple awards recognising her impactful work, she is a sought-after Keynote Speaker who has addressed audiences around the world, including commentating at political conferences.

Liz’s mission is to promote inclusive practice in the Early Years sector, with a particular focus on how race, culture and ethnicity should be considered in this practice. Liz’s accolades include being recognised in 2024 by Serendipity Institute for Black Arts and Heritage as 1 of 100 Black Women Who Have Made a Mark, recognised by the Black Cultural Archives as one of their 2022 40×40 Future Leaders, and nominated as a finalist for trainer of the year for the 2022 Nursery World Awards.

Her expertise and commitment to fostering inclusive environments make her a vital contributor to discussions on Equity in education, and I am privileged that she joined me to talk about her work.

In this Episode, Liz discusses how her own Early Years were influenced by her family, and how she wishes to continue this incredible work. She describes how addressing Racism is likely to take generations and how she is committed to influencing Policy to make this happen.

She also discusses how Racism has various ‘brands’ and that it is critical that all of them are addressed.

This is a fascinating conversation with Liz, and one that does peel away some of the systemic issues we have to reveal some uncomfortable truths. A must listen for anyone in multiple settings and organisations.
